How to Use the Reading Time Estimator
- Paste your text into the text area, or use the Paste / Copy buttons on the right side of the text box.
- Adjust the reading speed if needed (default 238 words per minute – average adult reading speed).
- Adjust the speaking speed for presentation timing (default 130 words per minute).
- Click "Estimate Reading Time" to see the results. The calculation only runs on button click.
- Review the estimated reading time, speaking time, and comprehensive text statistics.
- Use the Copy All Details button to copy a clean summary of all stats plus the tool link.

How Is Reading Time Calculated?
We split your text into words by standard word boundaries. The total word count is then divided by the reading speed (words per minute) to get the reading time in minutes. Seconds are rounded appropriately. The default speed of 238 WPM is based on research on average adult reading speed for non‑technical English text.
How to Interpret the Results
Our tool provides two time estimates:
- Reading time – how long a typical adult needs to read the text silently.
- Speaking time – how long it takes to deliver the same text as a speech or presentation.
Use the reading time for blog posts and articles. Use the speaking time to plan talks, podcasts, or video scripts. You can adjust both WPM values to match specific audiences – for example, children or non‑native speakers may require slower speeds.
Accuracy and Limitations
While our estimator provides a reliable approximation, actual reading time can vary due to:
- Text complexity: Technical, academic, or jargon‑heavy content slows down reading.
- Reader proficiency: Non‑native speakers may read more slowly.
- Formatting: Lists, bullet points, and images can alter reading flow.
- Purpose: Skimming vs. deep reading changes the effective WPM drastically.
